The story of Sky Rocket

Kennywood announced Sky Rocket in August 2009 as its seventh roller coaster for the 2010 season. The new steel ride was planned for the site of the Turnpike, whose final day had been set for August 16, 2009. coaster101.com· parkworld-online.com

The design was prepared specifically for Kennywood, bringing the park its first launch and inversions in many years. Premier Rides was chosen after the park reviewed manufacturers in the United States and overseas, and the ride used a linear synchronous motor launch without an over-the-shoulder harness. parkworld-online.com· pittsburghmagazine.com

Construction presented a proper Pennsylvania challenge. Although work began late and the winter was severe, Kennywood, Premier Rides, and their contractors completed, installed, commissioned, and opened the ride within six months, according to the park's general manager. parkworld-online.com

Sky Rocket opened to the public on June 29, 2010. It became Kennywood's first coaster with inversions since Steel Phantom, and contemporary reports described strong attendance and a warm public reception during its first good-weather days. themeparkarchive.com· parkworld-online.com
