The story of Lightning Racer
Hersheypark opened Lightning Racer to the public on May 13, 2000. The park describes it as the first dueling coaster in the United States, bringing a pair of wooden courses to its Midway America region. stories.hersheypa.com· hersheypa.com
Great Coasters International built the ride as two parallel racing tracks, each with its own lift and a series of crossings where the trains appear to challenge one another through the timberwork. The manufacturer lists six crossover moments along the course. greatcoasters.com
The structure has remained a working part of Hersheypark's coaster line. In the quiet months, the trains are removed for inspection and overhaul, while carpenters examine the wooden courses before another season begins. stories.hersheypa.com
