The story of The Curse at Alton Manor

The ride first appeared at Alton Towers in 1992 as The Haunted House, part of the park's important early development as a full theme park. Its bespoke transport system was designed by Mack Rides to keep the cars moving separately, with their speed varied from one scene to the next. en.wikipedia.org· darkridedatabase.com

The original building and transit system were later adapted for an interactive dark ride. For The Curse at Alton Manor, the laser equipment was removed and the cars were restored to their six-seat arrangement, allowing the old machinery to serve a new generation of visitors. en.wikipedia.org· darkridedatabase.com

The present attraction was developed as a narrative journey through a Victorian manor, with new scenery, projection work, sound and special effects set within the long-standing Mack Rides system. The result keeps the measured procession of a traditional haunted house while making careful use of modern theatrical craft. altontowers.com· framestore.com

Contemporary reporting praised the rebuilding for giving the old attraction a fresh life, while retaining its separate-moving cars, darkened passages and sense of suspense. In Gloomy Wood, the house remains a notable piece of Alton Towers engineering and theatre. darkridedatabase.com· framestore.com
