The story of Flight of Fear

Kings Island announced the new indoor coaster on August 17, 1995, placing it toward the back of the Coney Mall section. It was intended for the 1996 season, though its opening was postponed from April until June 18. coasterpedia.net

Flight of Fear was a prototype Premier Rides Catapult Coaster, using linear-induction motors rather than a conventional lift hill. Its 1996 arrival at Kings Island, alongside a twin installation at Kings Dominion, marked the beginning of the LIM-launched coaster era. kicentral.com· scholar.lib.vt.edu

The machinery and steelwork represented a considerable undertaking for the period. Coasterpedia records a construction cost of 11.2 million dollars, while contemporary reporting described an interior of more than a million pounds of steel tubing. coasterpedia.net· scholar.lib.vt.edu

In 2001, the ride took its present shortened name, and its shoulder restraints were replaced with lap bars following complaints about roughness. The building was later remade as part of Kings Island’s Area 72 in 2020. kicentral.com· coasterpedia.net
