The story of Haunted Mansion

The mansion’s exterior was constructed in 1962 and completed in 1963, standing in New Orleans Square while the attraction itself awaited its final form. Visitors could admire the finished house for years before the doors opened. waltdisney.org· d23.com

The original plan considered a walk-through house, but the designers found that a continuous ride would serve the visiting public more gracefully. The newly developed Omnimover supplied the answer, turning each small carriage toward the scenes prepared inside. waltdisney.org· arrow-development.design

Work was delayed by the demands of the 1964–1965 New York World’s Fair and by the long debate over the attraction’s interior. The completed ride finally opened in 1969, bringing together controlled movement, theatrical illusions, and a procession designed to welcome a great many visitors each hour. d23.com· waltdisney.org· stason.org

Arrow Development’s work on the transportation system placed the attraction among the company’s notable Disneyland achievements. Its 131-vehicle chain remains the quiet mechanical heart of the journey, carrying visitors onward without a conventional station stop between scenes. arrow-development.design· coasterpedia.net
