The story of Georgia Scorcher

Announced in November 1998, Georgia Scorcher brought a new stand-up steel coaster to the Georgia section of Six Flags Over Georgia. The park had a narrow piece of ground to work with, and Bolliger & Mabillard answered with a compact, busy course rather than a record-chasing giant. coasterpedia.net· en.wikipedia.org

The ride opened on May 8, 1999, with passengers travelling in a standing position through a chain-lift ascent, a 101-foot drop, an 81-foot vertical loop, and a corkscrew. It was the park’s second coaster from Bolliger & Mabillard, a Swiss firm whose steelwork was becoming a familiar sign of late-century amusement engineering. coasterpedia.net· sixflags.com

For visitors arriving on a hot Georgia afternoon, the attraction’s distinction is plain: it asks them to ride upright. Its 107-foot height, 54 mph speed, two inversions, and 1,300-rider hourly capacity made it a purposeful addition to the park’s front-of-the-day procession of steel rides. en.wikipedia.org

In 2019, as the coaster turned twenty, Georgia Scorcher received a substantial repainting reported by Coaster101. The work was a reminder that a ride may become part of a park’s landscape not only by opening with ceremony, but by being cared for season after season. coaster101.com
