The story of Skull Mountain

Great Adventure opened Skull Mountain in 1996 as its first indoor roller coaster, giving the park a family-sized steel ride among its larger outdoor attractions. greatadventurehistory.com

The construction replaced the former Rotor site. Crews cleared the ground, poured foundations, and raised the metal building that would contain the coaster and its mountain-like exterior. greatadventurehistory.com

The track was assembled inside the building with lift hills, tight turns, and enclosed passages, while additional rockwork and cavern details were added around the station and queue. greatadventurehistory.com

From its opening, the attraction was presented as more than a simple coaster: the queue, waterfalls, lantern-lit passages, and enclosed ride course were intended to make the journey into the mountain part of the visit. greatadventurehistory.com· greatadventurehistory.com
