The story of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad
Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad opened to visitors on September 23, 1980, bringing a runaway mine train to Frontierland at Walt Disney World. d23.com
The mountain was built entirely by hand rather than rising from the Florida landscape. Its later versions drew upon the warm sandstone country of Monument Valley, with cement and paint used to create the rugged rockwork. d23.com
The undertaking called for 6,500 tons of steel beams, rods and mesh, together with 4,675 tons of concrete and 4,000 gallons of desert paint. The final construction bill was 17 million dollars. allears.net
Following an extensive refurbishment, the attraction reopened at Magic Kingdom on May 3, 2026, with new track and refreshed trains. disneyparksblog.com
